Why Haven’t Bonus Shares Appeared in Your Holdings?

Key Reasons for Delay in Bonus Shares Crediting
- Eligibility Check:
- You must hold the shares on or before the ex-date/record date (T+1 settlement cycle). For example, if the record date is April 10, you must purchase the shares by April 9. Purchases on/after April 10 will not qualify.
- T+2 Crediting Timeline:
- Bonus shares are typically credited to your Demat Account within T+2 days from the record date.
- Example: If the record date is April 10, shares should reflect by April 12.
- Temporary ISIN Hold:
- Bonus shares are first held under a temporary ISIN (not visible/tradable).
- After 4–5 days, they are transferred to the permanent ISIN and become tradable.
- Portfolio P&L Glitch:
- Until shares are credited, your portfolio may show a temporary drop in P&L due to the adjusted stock price.
- The P&L corrects automatically once shares are credited.
Why the Stock Price Drops After Bonus Issues
- Price Adjustment: The stock price reduces proportionally to the bonus ratio (e.g., 1:1 bonus halves the price).
- No Value Loss: Your total investment value remains unchanged (lower price x increased shares).
Example: How Bonus Shares Work
- You Hold: 100 shares @ ₹1,000 → Value: ₹1,00,000.
- Bonus Ratio: 1:1 → New Shares: 100 (Total = 200)
- Adjusted Price: ₹500 (₹1,000 ÷ 2)
- New Value: 200 × ₹500 = ₹1,00,000 (no loss)
What If Bonus Shares Still Don’t Appear?
- Check Eligibility: Confirm you held shares before the ex-date.
- Wait 4–5 Days: Allow time for ISIN transfer and trading approval.
- Fractional Shares: Any fractional entitlement is paid as cash to your bank account.
Bonus Shares vs. Stock Splits
| Feature | Bonus Shares | Stock Splits |
| Share Quantity | Increases (e.g., 1:1 ratio). | Increases (e.g., 1:2 split). |
| Face Value | Remains unchanged. | Reduces (e.g., ₹10 → ₹5). |
| Impact on Price | Price adjusts downward proportionally. | Price adjusts downward proportionally. |
Note: Track bonus issue announcements and mark key dates (ex-date/record date) to avoid missing eligibility!
